Lake Sevan is the largest alpine freshwater lake in Armenia and the entire Caucasus region. It sits at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters and covers an area of about 1,360 square kilometers, earning it the nickname "Tears of the Caucasus." The air and water temperatures here are relatively low, making it a popular summer retreat. Locals enjoy coming here in the summer for camping, swimming, and picnicking. Lake Sevan is rich in fish resources, especially trout, which is famous for its delicious, tender meat, few bones, and high nutritional value. Sevanavank Monastery is located on Sevan Island in Lake Sevan. Founded in the 9th century, the existing structures include the Church of the Holy Apostles and the higher Church of the Holy Mother of God, with many historical relics preserved. Inside the Church of the Holy Mother of God, on the left (north side) of the entrance, there is a cross-stone carved during the Mongol era. At that time, to appease the Mongols, the deity was carved with Mongol features. The Church of the Resurrection, which was originally located on the higher part of the island, was destroyed during the Soviet era, but this remains a great place to enjoy the view. Due to water conservancy projects built during the Soviet era, the lake's water level dropped, and Sevan Island has since become a peninsula.
