Gyeongbokgung Palace - Gwanghwamun Changing of the Guard Ceremony

Time: 10:00, 13:00, 15:00 every day, 20 minutes, closed on Tuesdays Location: Behind Gwanghwamun Gate, Gyeongbokgung Palace, in front of Heungnyemun Gate During the Joseon Dynasty, the gatekeepers were responsible for guarding the main gates of the capital such as Dongdaemun (Heunginmun) and Namdaemun (Sungnyemun), as well as the main palace gates such as Gyeongbokgung Palace where the king lived. The gatekeepers will open and close Gwanghwamun and take turns on duty according to designated procedures. The gatekeeper system was first established in Korea in 1469, the first year of King Yejong of Joseon. Prior to that, the guards of the central army were responsible for guarding the palace.
