Bongeunsa Temple is a wonderful temple to visit while traveling in Seoul.

#SeoulTravel ✨️Bong Eun Sa✨️ was founded in 94 (10th year of King Wonseong’s reign) by the Silla Dynasty’s Yeonhoe State Preceptor and was called Gyeonseong Sa. Later, in the Joseon Dynasty, in 1498 (4th year of King Yeonsangun’s reign), Queen Jeonghyeon rebuilt the temple for Seolleung (宣陵: Seongjong’s Royal Tomb). In 1562 (17th year of King Myeongjong’s reign), Queen Munjeong took the lead in moving the Gyeonseong Sa site to the foot of Sudosan Mountain, saying it was a good place, and renamed the temple to Bongeun Sa. During the reign of King Jungjong, the monk examination was held here, and it is said that the two great masters Seosan and Samyeong also passed the exams here. It was destroyed during the Imjin War, but was restored, but was burned down again during the Byeongja War. It was rebuilt during the reign of King Sukjong and rebuilt again in 1825 (the 25th year of King Sunjo's reign). However, most of the buildings were destroyed again during the Korean War in 1950 and were rebuilt later. During the Byeongja War, many people drowned in the Han River while trying to escape, and a water-land ceremony was held at Bongeunsa Temple to console their souls. The water-land ceremony is still held every leap month.
