Mutsu Kokubunji & Kinokashita Park: A cherry blossom viewing spot surrounded by temple halls.

Mutsu Kokubunji, established during the Nara period by Emperor Shomu as one of the national Kokubunji temples, is the northernmost of these temples. Its Yakushido Hall, built by Date Masamune, the first lord of Sendai Domain, has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is also a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot in Sendai. The historic Yakushido Hall and the temple gate exude solemnity, and the romantic touch of spring cherry blossoms adds a serene beauty to the scene. Adjacent Kinokashita Park is a large park that preserves the ruins of the Nara-period Mutsu Kokubunji. The park is surrounded by temple and shrine buildings, with Yakushido Hall at its center, Kannon Hall to the west, and Hakusan Shrine to the east. It is a cherry blossom viewing spot featuring predominantly white Somei Yoshino cherry trees. Access to Mutsu Kokubunji is very convenient. From Sendai Station, you can take the subway or JR to Yakushido Station, and it's just a few minutes' walk from there.
