While walking through the city of Sendai, I came across a festival. The Sendai Aoba Festival, one of the three major festivals in Sendai, was being held, and I enjoyed the evening festival held on the Saturday before the third Sunday in May. Musical music reverberated through the city, and the displays of floats were gorgeous. On Jozenji Street, a dance called Suzume Odori was being performed, where people walked along the streets. Apparently the main festival will be held on Sunday. It feels like it's been a while since we've seen such a lively festival, with the streets in the city so colorful. According to the official website, the origin of the Suzume Odori dance is... It is said to have started in 1605, when stonemasons who had moved from Sakai (Osaka) performed an impromptu dance in front of Date Masamune at a banquet following the Sendai Castle transfer ceremony. The reason it's called "Suzume Odori" is because the dancing looks like a sparrow and the Date family crest was "bamboo and sparrow".
