Our favorite German castles

Did you know that many Easter traditions originated in Germany? More than just creating world-famous festival traditions, Germany has gifted the world with about 20,000 castles to visit. Today we highlight four of our favorite German castles. Swipe right to see what they look like. ➡️ 1️⃣ Neuschwanstein Castle 📍 Schwangau, Germany This 19th-century Romanesque Revival-style castle was built atop a rock ledge over the Pöllat Gorge in the Bavarian Alps by order of Bavaria’s King Louis II, so that he can be away from the public eye. 📸 by David Sjunnesson on Unsplash ------------------------------------- 2️⃣ Eltz Castle 📍 Wierschem, Germany Eltz Castle was never affected by war. It has been owned and maintained by the same family since when it was built. Many of the original furnishings of the past eight centuries remain in place. 📸 by Sander Lenaerts on Unsplash ------------------------------------- 3️⃣ Lichtenstein Castle 📍 Baden-Württemberg, Germany Lichtenstein Castle is a Gothic Revival castle built in the 1840s. It is a small fortress that stands atop the rock cliff and is surrounded by ditches and numerous underground paths – the only way for the fortress’ residents to escape. 📸 by Keira Siobhan on Unsplash ------------------------------------- 4️⃣ Drachenburg Castle 📍 Königswinter, Germany Schloss Drachenburg (“Dragon’s Castle”) Siegfried, the hero of the Nibelungenlied, is said to have slain the dragon Fafnir here and bathed in its blood to become invincible. Arnold I, the Cologne archbishop, ordered its construction from 1138 to 1167. 📸 by Jonathan Kemper on Unsplash
