Yamagata Shonai - Meet the self-mummified monk and see the Rakan Rock

The main purpose of this trip was to visit the many self-sustaining buddhas that remain in the Shonai area. I went to Kaikoji Temple in Sakata City. Shingon sect...I wonder if it's connected to the story of Kukai himself entering nirvana? It was the first time I've seen a crossed vajra (I later found out that there are family crests like that, I didn't know that). At this temple you can see two of them face to face (there is also a hanging scroll related to another monk enshrined in another temple in the bathhouse on display). It was a very mysterious experience. If you head a little north along the coastline, you will find a place where you can see rock-carved Buddhas on the rocks along the sea, and a place where a shimenawa rope is tied to a rock called Dewa Futami.
