The Grand Mural of Yongle Palace

The renowned Yongle Palace is located in Ruicheng County, Yuncheng. In the 1950s, it underwent a globally notable relocation. Originally one of the three major ancestral courts of the Quanzhen School, Yongle Palace is the most complete existing Taoist architectural complex from the Yuan Dynasty. From south to north, the palace is arranged with the Palace Gate, Wuji Gate, Sanqing Hall, Chunyang Hall, and Chongyang Hall. The construction follows the Song Dynasty's "Yingzao Fashi" and the "Jianzhu Method" from the Liao and Jin periods. The space is grand and imposing, with murals covering the four main halls. The ceilings of the halls are adorned with magnificent caissons, but photography is not allowed. The most clearly preserved and famous mural is the Yuan Dynasty's "Chaoyuan Tu" in the Sanqing Hall. This grand piece, praised as "Immortals Paying Homage, with the Wind Moving Across the Wall," has been seen in 3D reproductions at the Shanxi Museum, Yuncheng Museum, and Guangdong Provincial Museum. However, when visiting the site in person, facing the majestic hall and the grand mural spanning over 400 square meters, even those unfamiliar with art cannot help but be moved. The sense of awe is incomparable to that experienced in a museum.
