Rotterdam at Christmas – Recommendations for What to Visit (with a festive touch)

#hellochristmas Rotterdam is one of the most beautiful European cities to visit during Christmas because it’s modern, vibrant, and has fantastic Christmas markets and winter lighting, while still being much less crowded than Amsterdam. Here are your mentioned spots + why they’re especially nice in December: 1. Markthal Huge indoor market hall with the spectacular “Horn of Plenty” artwork on the ceiling. → During Christmas it’s packed with festive food stalls, Dutch winter specialties (oliebollen, stroopwafels, glühwein), cheese, chocolate and gifts. Open every day, even on Christmas Day and Boxing Day until late. Perfect for lunch or dinner in a warm place. 2. Oude Haven The oldest harbor in the city, surrounded by historic ships, cafés and restaurants. → In December the whole area is beautifully lit, many terraces have heat lamps and blankets, and you’ll often find small Christmas markets or live music in the evenings. 3. Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen The mirror-covered “art storage” building that reflects the entire city. → In winter the reflections of all the Christmas lights and the illuminated skyline are absolutely magical, especially at dusk or after dark. The rooftop forest is free to visit and gives you a 360° view. 4. Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug) – “The Swan” The iconic white bridge and the absolute symbol of Rotterdam. → At Christmas the entire bridge and the surrounding Kop van Zuid area are covered in thousands of lights. Walking or cycling across it at night is unforgettable. 5. Euromast 185 m tall tower with panoramic views. → In December the city and port sparkle with Christmas lights and you can often see all the way to The Hague or even snow on the dunes. They sometimes have special Christmas brunches or dinners in the revolving restaurant. 6. Delfshaven The only historic part that survived the 1940 bombing – canals, old houses, windmill. → Feels like a little Christmas card in winter. There is usually a very cozy Christmas market here in December, ice-skating (if it’s cold enough), and the old pilgrimage church is beautifully decorated.
