2024 Rome Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in September)
Rome is Italy's capital city and, in classical antiquity, the center of the Roman Empire. Because of the city's long and storied history, it is known as the "Eternal City". Presently, Rome has become a large "open-air history museum". Inside the city, many traces of ancient Rome have been preserved. You can go to the Colosseum—one of the symbols of the powerful ancient Roman Empire. At the Roman Forum, you will be shocked and amazed by the prosperity of the ancient imperial world. The Pantheon is a place where you can see architectural miracles constructed over 1,000 years ago. Within the city of Rome, there is also a country within a country—Vatican City. This is a place where you can experience the ultimate in Christian religious art and see many masterpieces left behind by Renaissance masters.

Rome’s most iconic landmarks The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps, or Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, is one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, embodying the elegance and charm of the Eternal City. This grand staircase, with its 135 steps, connects the Piazza di Spagna at the base to the Trinità dei Monti church at the top, offering stunning views, a rich history, and a lively atmosphere. The Spanish Steps are set in the heart of Rome’s historic center, surrounded by beautiful Baroque architecture, high-end boutiques, and charming cafes. The staircase itself is a masterpiece of design, with its sweeping curves, terraces, and landings creating a harmonious and fluid ascent. The steps are often adorned with seasonal flowers, adding to the picturesque setting, especially during the spring when they are covered in blooming azaleas. #100waysoftravel

Rome citybreak 🇮🇹❤️
#citydaytours
My summer trip to Rome was absolutely incredible! 🇮🇹 The city is a vibrant mix of ancient history and modern charm. We visited iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, where the entrance fee was about €16 for a combined ticket. Exploring these historic sites was like stepping back in time. 🏛️
The Vatican City, with its stunning St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, was another highlight. Booking tickets in advance for the Vatican Museums, which were around €17, helped us skip the long lines. We also enjoyed wandering through the charming Trastevere neighborhood and savoring delicious Italian cuisine at local trattorias. 🍝🍷
Rome’s rich history, combined with its lively streets and excellent food, made it an unforgettable destination.

National Roman Museum 🇮🇹
#museums
The National Roman Museum - Palazzo Massimo was a fantastic stop on my summer trip to Rome. Located near Termini Station, the entrance fee is about €10, which gives access to this and other sites in the museum network.
The palace is a treasure trove of ancient Roman artifacts, from stunning frescoes to intricate mosaics and ancient coins. I was particularly captivated by the frescoes from the Villa of Livia and the impressive collection of Roman sculptures. The museum’s layout allows for a leisurely exploration of its rich exhibits.
Nearby, I strolled through the vibrant Esquilino district and enjoyed some great Italian food. Palazzo Massimo is a must-visit for anyone fascinated by Rome's ancient history. 🏛️🍝

"I recently returned from a 1 month trip to Rome, and I'm still reeling from the experience. From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in for a treat. The city's ancient ruins, Vatican City, and delicious Italian cuisine made me feel like I was in a different world.
My trip began with a flight from Singapore to Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, which cost me around $800. After arriving, I took a taxi to my hotel in the city center, which cost around $50. My hotel was centrally located, making it easy to explore the city.
For the next few days, I explored the city using the efficient metro system, which cost around $2 per ride. Here are some of the top places I visited:
- Colosseum: $12 entrance fee (I learned about the history of gladiators)
- Vatican City: free entrance, but Vatican Museums cost $20 (I saw the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica)
- Roman Forum: $12 entrance fee (I explored the ancient ruins)
- Pantheon: free entrance (I admired the stunning architecture)
- Trevi Fountain: free entrance (I made a wish and took in the beautiful scenery)
- Spanish Steps: free entrance (I people-watched and enjoyed the street performers)
I also took a day trip to Pompeii, which cost around $100 for a return train ticket. I saw the ancient city frozen in time.
The food in Rome was incredible, and I had some of the best meals of my life. A traditional Italian dinner at a local trattoria cost around $25, while a high-end dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant cost around $150. I also tried pizza, gelato, and espresso.
Here's a breakdown of my expenses:
- Flights: $8000
- Accommodation (7 nights): $1,000
- Food and drink: $600
- Transportation (metro, taxis, etc.): $150
- Activities and entrance fees: $300
- Total: $2,850
I would highly recommend Rome to anyone looking for a historical and cultural experience. The city has something for everyone, and I can't wait to go back."

I am in love with Rome
#100waysoftravel
What a fascinating city this is. I have such fond and beautiful memories from my time here. With thousands of years of rich history and stunning beauty on every nook and corner, you could spend weeks and weeks on a Roman holiday.
The good is exemplary. Never have I found simplest of things taste this good. Every pizza or every pasta that I had was superb. The gelato's and coffee were another level. The architectural heritage of this city makes it a non stop museum with every other sight worthy of appreciation. Not to forget that Vatican, the world's smallest country also is within the limits of this city. So unique!
From my travel expericnes this was also the place where I saw the most well dressed being. And I don't mean overdoing of things like you see in say China or else where. (excuse the example). But here they did it effortlessly. Truly an impressive experience. #100waysoftravel #roma #italy
Capitoline Museum 🇮🇹
#museums
Visiting the Capitoline Museums in Rome was a highlight of my summer vacation in Italy! Located on Capitoline Hill, the entrance fee is around €15, which is a great value for such an extensive collection of art and artifacts.
The museums house incredible treasures like the ancient Roman statues and the famous equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. I loved wandering through the grand halls and exploring the rich history of Rome. The views from the museums over the city are also stunning.
Afterwards, I enjoyed a stroll through the nearby Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo. The Capitoline Museums are a must-visit for history and art lovers looking to delve into Rome’s fascinating past. 🏛️✨

Tired of touristic Rome? I have something for you
The Colosseum, the Capitoline Hill, the Pantheon... we won't show you the tourist spots in the guidebook. If this is not your first time in Rome and you want something not standard, go to the area
Trastevere (translated simply as “across the Tiber River”) is an old town with narrow cobbled streets, medieval houses covered with ivy, it is also called the “heart of Rome”. There are no crowds of tourists here and you can calmly walk, buy ripe apricots in a small shop, play with the owner’s dog, try on dresses by an unknown Italian designer, and then have an incredibly tasty dinner in a small restaurant, where the mustachioed Italian owner himself will take your order and feed you simply magical homemade pasta
What is a must see/visit at Trastevere? Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere (the oldest in operation, the first church on this site was before the reign of Constantine, and inside there is a very atypical mosaic a la Byzantine style) 8 courtyard
Basilica of Santa Cecilia market in piazza di S. Cosimato
(cheeses, butter - everything as for our own) near the basilica
S.Pietro in Montorio is a good observation deck with an unusual panorama of Rome.
Oh, by the way, try the pizza at Trastevere! And one more thing - the price tag in restaurants here is much lower than in the tourist part of Rome.

This is where the past meets the present, and every corner tells a story.
Visiting one of seven wonders of the world
Visiting Colosseo is definitely a must when traveling to Rome. To avoid queue, be sure to book your ticket a week before your visit. I was going to buy the ticket on the spot, but it’s a long queue on site and the tickets are almost sold out. I’ve tried to buy the ticket the night before our visit but I couldn’t get a ticket. So I went on the second day at 8.30am to buy the tickets, ID is required when you purchase the ticket. Student promo price is only valid for Europe citizen. The normal ticket is €16 which give you one time entrance to the colosseum, palatine hill and Roman Forum.
My advice, avoid visiting in summer cuz it’s gonna be super hot!

SUMMER IN ITALY!
Cortina D’Ampezzo is undoubtedly the most famous of all the small mountain towns in the Dolomites and due to its popularity, it’s also one of the busiest and most expensive. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring Cortina and its surroundings.
The high street boasts high-end fashion stores and fancy restaurants so if you want to intersperse your mountain holiday with some shopping then Cortina is the place to do it.
The popularity of Cortina is definitely justified. There’s so much to do around the town, it’s difficult not to recommend it to most people coming to the Dolomites.

Colosseum and cafe with history
The Colosseum, the greatest amphitheater of the Roman Empire and still the landmark of Rome. We visited in October where the sun set quite early. We arrived just before sunset and hence could only manage to walk from the outskirts. Next time we would join a guided tour.
There are several sightseeing points around the Colosseum and it was a great walk around Rome where we ended in the Sciasia Caffe 1919 after an hour or so, a few streets from the Vatican.
Sciasia Caffe 1919
Address: Via Fabio Massimo, n.80/a, 00192 Roma
They have its unique blend of coffee and pastries are surprisingly good as well. No wonder it stands from 1919 till now. What a wonderful found!
Cloth inspired exhibits at this gallery
Galleria Degli Arazzi is an interesting gallery that one would have to check out when at Rome.
It is special as we are used to paintings, photos and sculptures on exhibit in Europe but here, what you find is fabric created cloth artwork which importantly, is linked to each other and tell stories.
heard that restoration of damaged parts alone take 6 months, so do check this place out.
Appreciate the audio and text aids as well as it allowed us to better appreciate the exhibit
A museum with a huge collection of items
As a fan of arts, was very excited to see the huge collection of art pieces related to catholics and also sistine chapel here.
came to this museum and i must say that there are many like myself as the queue was long.
also a good place to check out sculptures, stories via painting and interior of european buildings here.
Definitely make a reservation in advance for tickets as they tend to sell out.
Also do not miss out the circular staircase which is featured in their magnets and books, sites.
