The dzong's strategic location, surrounded by azure rivers and verdant mountains, added to its mystical allure, making it clear why this site was chosen by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the 17th century to be the spiritual and administrative center of the region.


Entering the dzong, I was struck by the harmony of its design and the intricate detail of its craftsmanship. You have to cross the Punakha river on a swinging bridge to reach the fort. The whole place is very majestic and decorative. It is a large space and it takes almost an hour to do even a quick tour of the place. Lake’s water has a beautiful light green shade, you might think the pics are photoshopped but this is the real color. A good time to visit this landmark is in spring time as the place is covered with the purple bloom of jacaranda flowers.
