Tremiti islands - the Arcipelago

The Arcipelago of Tremiti is an unbelievable place in the middle of the Adriatic sea in Italy. It is Part of Gargano National Park. The archipelago is composed of 5 islands: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio, and Pianosa. The islands were used as a penal colony since the Iron Age passing by Romans with Emperor Augustus who had exiled his granddaughter, Julia the Younger, to the Tremiti on charges of adultery, until the Fascist Regime when Mussolini had hundreds of homosexuals deported to the internment camp of San Domino, fortunately, closed after one year in 1939. In spring and summer several ferries depart from the port of Vieste, with a journey time of approximately 2 hours. It is also possible to reach the Tremiti islands from Rodi Garganico (minor route) or even from the ports of Peschici and Manfredonia.
