It is located in the center of the city island, Tha Wasukri Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District. Wat Mahathat is a very important temple during the Ayutthaya period. Because it is the temple that enshrines the royal relics of the city and is the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of the Khamwasi sect. This temple was therefore built and maintained all the time until it was destroyed and abandoned after the fall of Ayutthaya for the second time. The importance of Wat Mahathat, in addition to being the place where the relics of the Buddha are enshrined, is that it is also considered the center of the city and the venue for various royal ceremonies of Ayutthaya. The Supreme Patriarch of the Khamwasi sect resided in the temple, while the Supreme Patriarch of the Aranyawasi sect resided at Wat Pa Kaew (Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon). It was also the place where Phra Si Sin and Chao Muen Si Sarak and their group ambush the troops at the prang of Wat Mahathat before marching into the palace through the Mongkhon Sunthon Gate to arrest Somdet Phra Si Saowak. During the reign of King Songtham The original prang of the temple, built of laterite, had almost half of its spire collapsed to the Garuda level. However, for some unknown reason, it was not restored to its original condition during that reign. Later, King Prasat Thong renovated it to a height of 25 wa in 2176 B.E. and during the reign of King Borommakot in 2275 - 2301 B.E. until the fall of Ayutthaya for the second time, Wat Mahathat was destroyed until only ruins remained and was abandoned.
