It was originally called Wat Pa Kaew and was given the name “Wat Yai Chai Mongkol” during the reign of King Naresuan the Great. It has been continuously renovated and when Ayutthaya was lost for the second time, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol was abandoned. Later, during the Rattanakosin period, the temple was renovated.
