Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Palma is located in the Bay of Palma on the south coast of Mallorca, the largest island of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the capital and largest city of the Autonomous Region of the Balearic Islands. As of 2018, Palma Airport serves more than 29 million passengers per year, a figure that surpasses Wuhan in China. In the same year, the passenger volume of Hong Kong International Airport was 74.7 million. Founded in the Roman times, the city suffered several Vandal attacks during the decline of the Western Roman Empire before being reconquered by the Byzantine Empire, then colonized by the Moors and, in the 13th century, by James I of Aragon. Palma became a refuge for many people during the occupation of Catalonia and Valencia by Napoleon's troops in the early 19th century, during which freedom flourished until the restoration of absolutism. The advent of mass tourism from the 1950s transformed the city into a tourist destination and attracted many workers from mainland Spain, which led to major changes in the city's traditions, language and economic strength. Today, more than half of the city's workforce is engaged in tourism, making it Palma's main industry. Tourism has led to rapid economic growth in Palma, making Mallorca wealthier compared to the rest of Spain. Palma is a port of call for many cruise companies on their Mediterranean routes.
