Manzamo: A Natural Poem of Okinawa

Manzamo, located in Onna Village on the west coast of Okinawa's main island, is a national natural park and a symbolic landmark of Okinawa. The name itself sparks curiosity. "Manza" means "ten thousand people can sit," and "mo" in the Okinawan dialect refers to a grassy field. Together, the name signifies a vast lawn capable of accommodating ten thousand people. Upon arrival, a magnificent view unfolds before your eyes. Atop the coastal cliff, a vast expanse of green grass stretches out like a velvet carpet, harmonizing with the blue sky and turquoise sea. The gentle sea breeze rustles the grass, as if whispering the rhythm of nature. Standing at the edge of the cliff, the sea and sky merge into one, the crystal-clear water seamlessly blending with the azure heavens. Waves relentlessly crash against the reefs below, sending up snow-white sprays and a deafening roar. The protruding coral reefs, resembling an elephant's trunk, have been sculpted by time and waves into unique formations, a masterpiece of nature's artistry. In the early 18th century, King Sho Kei of the Ryukyu Kingdom visited this place and, upon seeing the plain, praised its capacity to seat ten thousand people, thus giving rise to the name "Manzamo." Today, it is not only a scenic spot but also a place steeped in history and culture, attracting countless visitors who immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty and captivating stories of this coastal wonderland.
