Oamaru Sunrise

Oamaru (English: Oamaru; Maori: Te Oha-a-Maru), the largest town in North Otago, is located on the South Island of New Zealand and is the main town of the Waitaki District. It is 80 kilometers north of Timaru and 110 kilometers south of the city center of Dunedin. Oamaru has a population of about 13,900, making it the 28th largest urban area in New Zealand, and it is also the third largest city in the Otago region, ranking just behind Queenstown and Dunedin. Oamaru is rich in white limestone, and most of the buildings from its early prosperous period were constructed with local white stone. The town has many well-preserved New Zealand historical buildings, most of which are concentrated in the Oamaru Historic District, that is, on Harbour Street. Tyne Street and Harbour Street are distinctive and also a shopping paradise. Oamaru is home to two different species of penguins, the little blue penguin and the yellow-eyed penguin. The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is a habitat for little blue penguins. The yellow-eyed penguins can be observed from a special viewing point in Bushy Beach, Oamaru.
