"The gate has a tower on top, which is called Qiao for looking out." The history of Ningbo City began with the first brick of the Drum Tower. In 821 AD, Han Cha, the governor of Mingzhou, moved the provincial capital from Xiaoxi Town to "Sanjiangkou" in Ningbo. He built official offices with the area from Zhongshan Square to Drum Tower as the center, and erected wooden fences as a city. Later, he built a city wall with bricks and stones from the big city. It was called Zicheng in history. The south gate of Zicheng is now the Drum Tower. Ningbo Drum Tower has a history of more than 1,100 years. It is the only remaining ancient city tower site in Ningbo and one of the ancient buildings that are key protected national cultural relics. During the Spring Festival, the Drum Tower looks festive with red lanterns and couplets. Climbing up the Drum Tower, you can have a panoramic view of the entire city of Ningbo. There is also a Zicheng Coffee on the Drum Tower. Although the store is not big, it has a full atmosphere due to its unique geographical location. When night falls, you can come down from the Drum Tower and go to the busy pedestrian street to taste the local delicacies. Ningbo is a two-hour drive from Shanghai, perfect for a weekend of shopping and eating.
