Nikko Toshogu is a Shinto shrine situated in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. The shrine is part of the “Shrines and Temples of Nikko,” listed in 1999 as a World Heritage site. It is the mausoleum of Ieyasu Tokugawa, who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603 and passed away in 1615. The original temple was rebuilt into the spectacular complex by the third Shogun Iemitsu in 1636 to demonstrate the power of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
