Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster

The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster is a representative group of Fujian Tulou buildings located in Tianluokeng Village, Shuyang Town, Nanjing County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, China. These buildings were mainly constructed by the Hakka people and reflect the Hakka culture and traditional architectural techniques of the southwestern Fujian region. The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster consists of five tulou buildings: • Buyun Lou (square) • Hechang Lou (circular) • Zhenchang Lou (circular) • Ruiyun Lou (circular) • Wenchang Lou (elliptical) These buildings are arranged according to the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, forming a unique "four dishes and one soup" landscape that appears particularly spectacular when viewed from above. Buyun Lou was built during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1796) and is one of the earliest tulou buildings. Each tulou has a multi-story structure used for residential, storage, and other purposes, and typically features a central public space such as an ancestral hall or well. Cultural Value The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster is not only an important historical and cultural heritage site but also a place where local residents live. These tulou reflect the defensive needs and clan-based living arrangements of ancient Chinese society. In 2008, the Fujian Tulou, including the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming an internationally recognized valuable cultural landscape.
