Ming Muang Temple, Nan

Wat Ming Muang, Nan City Pillar Shrine Wat Ming Muang is located on Suriyapong Road. It is the place where the city pillar of Nan Province is enshrined. The history of Wat Ming Muang is that it was originally an abandoned temple. There was a city pillar that was a large log that two people could hug. It was found in the ruins of the temple. Around 1857, Chao Anant Woraritdet, the ruler of Nan, established a new temple and named it Wat Ming Muang, after the name of the city pillar, Ming Muang Pillar. Later, in 1984, it was demolished and a new chapel was built in the contemporary Lanna style as it is today. A distinctive feature is the stucco pattern on the outer wall of the chapel, which is very beautiful and intricate. It is the work of the Chiang Saen craftsmen and is very beautiful. Inside, there are murals showing the way of life of the people of Nan, made by local craftsmen of the present era. In the temple area, there is also the city pillar enshrined in the Chaturamuk pavilion in front of the chapel. The city pillar is approximately 3 meters high. The base is decorated with carved wood, lacquered and gilded. The top of the pillar is carved in the shape of the face of Brahma with the names Metta, Karuna, Mudita, and Upekkha. The city pillar of Nan, which was originally called the “Ming Muang Pillar”, was originally made of large golden teak wood with a diameter of approximately 3 feet and a height of approximately 3 meters. It is a round pillar with a lotus bud top buried directly in the ground. There is no shrine or building covering it. It is assumed that it was built during the time of Chao Atthawarapanyo, the ruler of Nan, because in the past, Nan did not have a principle for building city pillars. #Waiting for the day to travel
