[📍Nagasaki] Hashima Island

Hashima Island is located about 40 minutes by boat from Nagasaki Port. It is an artificial island built by reclaiming land around a reef. The island is surrounded by a quay and its appearance, with its rows of high-rise reinforced concrete buildings, resembles the battleship "Tosa," hence the name "Battleship Island." At its peak in 1960, it was home to an astounding 5,300 people, making it the most densely populated island in Japan at the time. There are elementary and junior high schools, hospitals, movie theaters, pachinko parlors, and other entertainment facilities on the island, so people could live their entire lives on the island. There is even a shrine.
