Lake Millstatt, Austria

Millstatt is a municipality in the district of Spital an der Drau in the Austrian state of Carinthia. Famous for being a traditional health resort and spa town on Lake Millstatt and for the Benedictine Millstatt Abbey, founded around 1070. Although the oldest archaeological artifacts found in the area date back to the Neolithic period, the name "Millstatt" probably refers to the Celtic expression "mils," meaning a mountain stream or creek. Lake Millstatt is 12 kilometers long, 1.8 kilometers wide, with a lake area of ​​13.3 square kilometers, an altitude of 588 meters, an average water depth of 89 meters, and a maximum water depth of 142 meters. One of its most historically and culturally significant places. On the one hand, the cityscape is characterized by the historic « Habsburg Villa » - built between 1875 and 1910, and on the other hand, the Benedictine monastery with its famous Last Judgment fresco and the 12th-century cloister. There is also a mermaid statue in Lake Millstatt.
