The Historic Charm of the Church of St. Paul in Melaka

The Church of St. Paul in Melaka is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in the city, located at the top of St. Paul's Hill. When you visit the site, you can immediately feel the centuries of history surrounding it. The church was originally built in 1521 by a Portuguese nobleman named Duarte Coelho and was initially a simple chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Over time, it grew into a full-fledged church as Melaka became an important trading port. One of the first things that stands out when visiting St. Paul’s Church is its ruined state. The roof is long gone, and only the stone walls remain, weathered by time. Yet, there’s a certain charm in the ruin—it’s peaceful, and it almost feels like stepping into a time capsule. The church also offers a fantastic view of the city below, giving visitors a glimpse of Melaka's blend of modern and historical landscapes. Inside the church, you can see old tombstones and inscriptions on the walls. Some of these were written in Portuguese, reflecting the colonial history of the site. The statue of St. Francis Xavier stands outside, honoring the missionary who once used the church as a base for his work in Southeast Asia. Although it’s no longer an active place of worship, the Church of St. Paul remains a must-visit for history lovers or anyone looking to explore the rich heritage of Melaka. Walking through its ruins, you can easily imagine what life must have been like in the 16th century when this church was a center of activity. #churches
