St. Mark's Basilica. St. Mark's Basilica is a combination of various styles including Eastern Byzantine art, ancient Roman art, medieval Gothic art, and Renaissance art. The overall mix of styles does not appear chaotic. Although it seems out of place with the rest of Venice, the more you look at it, the more surprisingly beautiful it becomes. The basilica is named after St. Mark, a disciple of Jesus, who is buried there. St. Mark is the author of the Gospel of Mark in the Bible and is revered by Venetians as the city's protector. His mount is a lion, and Venice's city emblem is a giant lion holding the Gospel.
