The Philippines: Manila and its Dilemma?

Day 1 in the Philippines: Arriving in Manila After almost six years away, returning to the Philippines fills me with a unique mix of emotions—excitement to see familiar sights from home, tempered by the realisation that my visit is as much a discovery as a homecoming as I stepped off the plane and felt the warm, humid air against my skin, a bittersweet sensation washed over me. Manila, the capital city, now felt both familiar and foreign. The first thing that struck me was the significant change in infrastructure. New highways, towering skyscrapers, and sleek airport terminals painted a picture of a city on the rise. Yet, the contrast was unavoidable: sprawling informal settlements remained alongside these symbols of progress. This duality is quintessentially Manila—a city of extremes where modernity coexists with tradition. The cost of living was also a stark reminder of the evolving economic landscape. Prices for everyday goods and services have risen significantly, reflecting broader economic shifts in the region. As a returning visitor, I found this reality hard to ignore, especially compared to what I remembered years ago. One of the biggest challenges during my return was the exploitation of tourists. While most Filipinos are warm and hospitable, a few take advantage of visitors through overpriced transportation, misleading deals, and scams. These negative experiences overshadow the country’s potential as a top tourist destination and undermine the efforts of those working to enhance its reputation. Despite these challenges, what stood out most was the resilience and warmth of the Filipino spirit. Strangers offering directions, taxi drivers sharing stories of their lives, and the familiar sound of Tagalog in every corner reminded me of the unchanging heart of Manila—the people. My first day in the city highlighted its complexity. It’s a place of contradictions where progress and challenges coexist. As I prepare to explore more of the country in the coming days, I sincerely hope that the Philippines will continue to grow while preserving its core values of hospitality, kindness, and resilience. #travel #couplestrip #citydaytours #itsmorefuninthephilippine #philippines 📍Address:
