Chiang Mai's Blue Temple, Wat Ban Den, has transformed from a small mountain temple into the largest temple complex in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Rai is known for its famous Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), but Chiang Mai also has a Blue Temple (Wat Ban Den), named for its blue exterior. However, Chiang Mai's blue is a deeper shade, while Chiang Rai's is more sapphire. Additionally, Chiang Mai's Blue Temple is larger and has a longer history. Located on a remote hillside, it takes about 70 minutes to drive from the old city to Chiang Mai's Blue Temple. The surrounding landscape is filled with hills and fields, offering a peaceful and rustic charm. The temple features a blue base color, complemented by vibrant sculptures, wooden carvings, and glittering gold leaf, giving it a somewhat luxurious and splendid appearance. The temple complex is vast, requiring considerable time and energy to explore fully. This is especially challenging in the summer heat. It is said that Chiang Mai's Blue Temple is still expanding. It's hard to imagine that it started as an obscure small temple and has now become the largest temple complex in Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai's Blue Temple is truly remarkable.
