The Asylum Tavern

The Asylum Tavern is located in a quiet residential street at the northern end of Peckham. The nearest station is Queens Road Peckham. The pub was originally built in 1856, the pub you see today was built in the late 1930’s. This pub is named after the ‘Licensed Victuallers’ Asylum which was built in 1827 just up the road. Asylum traditionally meant ‘sanctuary’ and the buildings were actually a home for the elderly and retired pub landlords. This is traditionally decorated three bar pub that has a proper oldschool feel. The largest bar is at the front right and is decorated light grey, has some comfy red velour banquettes, a fireplace plus black and white photos of film stars around the walls. Just to the left is a snug with a screen on the wall and a small hatch like servery. At the back, is the third bar which is similarly decorated and has a pool table, a dartboard a GAA Dublin flag and a St George’s Cross. The servery intersects each bar and is well weathered.
