UK Midland Bank Transformed into Hotel-The Ned London

The Ned London was founded by the well-known private club Soho House in London. Since its inception in 1995, it has always been an alternative 'holiday villa' for wealthy members. Soho House, which now has twenty club bases worldwide, opened a hotel in London last year: The Ned London. This hotel, which was renovated from the old site of the Midland Bank, was named 'The Ned' in tribute to Edwin Ned Lutyens, the architect who built the bank in 1924. Past and Present of the Building The building where the hotel is located used to be the headquarters of the Midland Bank in the UK. At the beginning of its construction, it was the largest clearing house bank in the world. Midland Bank was once one of the four major bank groups in the UK. It was fully acquired by HSBC in 1992 and was renamed HSBC UK in 1999 in line with HSBC's unified brand. Design Inspiration Drawing on the Art Deco DNA of the bank building itself in the 1920s, The Ned design team, composed of Soho House founder Nick Jones and New York design company Sydell Group, incorporated arch elements, geometric lines, brass materials, fancy glass, mirror ingenuity, and spherical shapes into the club, making the space bloom with the glory of the early 20th century. Eye-catching Lobby The hotel's lobby originally had 92 pillars covered with African mica, which were beautifully decorated with luxurious mohair sofas, aged copper hardware, and African green chrome mica. The hotel's 252 rooms are full of the charm of the 1920s, with velvet club chairs, palm-shaped iron chandeliers hanging in the bedrooms, and oriental-style vintage carpets, full of nostalgic style. Ned's Private Club The most unique is that the original bank vault has now been transformed into a cocktail bar and high-end lounge lined with 3800 safes, separated by a 20-ton, 2-meter-wide circular iron door, known as the 'locked bar'. This is also where Ned's private members' club is located. After entering the vault through the reception desk, the bright bar comes into view, and the low-key luxury dark wood grain and jacquard fabric appear together, bringing a comfortable and warm relaxation atmosphere to the entire space.
