Whale Watching in Mirissa, Sri Lanka: 2024

In Mirissa, Sri Lanka, there are strict regulations prohibiting tourists from swimming with whales. Over two consecutive days, I joined different whale watching tours. On the first day, we quickly spotted a fin whale after setting sail, but it swam too fast for me to capture it with my GoPro underwater. The tour cost around 3000. On the second day, with another captain, we witnessed a spectacular sight of dolphins, but unfortunately, no blue whales were seen. It is said that blue whales were only spotted once last January. This tour was approximately 2500. Conclusion: Capturing whales in the same frame is challenging. Blue whales are rare and slow, while fin whales are more common but fast, requiring quick action to capture them. If you want to be in the same frame, the person taking the photo needs to be quick too.
