Lisbon's ascent, the Castle of Saint George

The Castle of Saint George is located in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and is a landmark building of Lisbon. Parts of the walls of the Castle of Saint George were built by the Visigoths, and from the labyrinth-like walls, one can see the entire city. The Tagus River flows past the walls, serving as a vigilance mechanism. Here, people can better appreciate the architectural art of the city: from the Alfama to the futuristic castles and suspension bridges in the distant districts, as well as the open-air ruins of the Carmo Church in the city center. From the time of Saint Denis to the Manueline period, the castle was continuously used as a royal palace, and it is a beautiful place for a stroll: gardens, ponds, a few swans or peacocks, etc. It was successively occupied by Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Christians, and was often used as the military, governmental, and administrative center of Portugal. In 1940, Salazar ordered the demolition of all buildings after the Manueline period. Most of what we see of the castle today was built during the Salazar era. The towers and walls were constructed using the stones left from the original castle.
