There are trails around the lake for locals and visitors to jog or bike. Turn onto Marshall Avenue, a suburban road that leads to a cluster of five rental homes on the shores of Lake Hayes. Three of the cottages are named after the alpine lakes. Stay at Hayes Cottage, a modern two-bedroom cabin with a kitchenette, fireplace and cozy lounge with large windows overlooking the lake. If you’re up early, you’ll see dog walkers and joggers in the early morning. It’s a balmy 20s in the winter, but the sun seems to be everywhere. Don’t forget to pack a beanie, merino hiking jacket and scarf. If you’re hiking long distances, consider bringing water, a raincoat, gloves and an extra layer of merino. Take the 8km loop around Lake Hayes, where towering snow-capped mountains fill the crystal clear sapphire sky, reflecting off the lake. The narrow dirt track rises 68m and is now a wide wooden boardwalk. If you’re hungry, stop in Arrowtown and grab a bowl of black rice ginger porridge, coconut yoghurt, fresh kiwi and toasted coconut. The cottages, along with the former Chinese miners’ huts, are part of Arrowtown, giving you a visual glimpse into the area’s fascinating gold mining history. #newzealandtrip #queenstown
