Seiryo-ji Temple, Kyoto Seiryo-ji Temple (Saga Seiryo-ji Temple) is an important temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism, located in Saga, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City, and is a landmark in the Sagano area. The temple is famous for enshrining a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and has a long history and rich cultural heritage. The history of Seiryo-ji Temple in Kyoto can be traced back to the late Heian period, when it was founded in 984 by the eminent monk Chonen. Originally the detached palace of Emperor Saga, it was later converted into a temple and named "Seiryo-ji Temple" after the Qingliang Mountain of the Tang Dynasty in China. Chonen was influenced by Mount Wutai during his visit to the Song Dynasty, and after returning to Japan, he attempted to establish a large Seiryo-ji Temple at the foot of Mount Atago in Kyoto. Although he encountered many obstacles, his legacy was eventually realized by his disciple Josen, who established the status of Seiryo-ji Temple by placing a standing statue of Shakyamuni Buddha brought back from the Song Dynasty in the Shakado Hall of Saikyo-ji Temple.
