Kiyomizu Temple is the head temple of the Hosso sect of Japanese Buddhism (Northern School) and was founded in 778. Kiyomizu Temple is the oldest temple in Kyoto and is listed as one of Japan's national treasures. In 1994, Kiyomizu Temple was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kiyomizu Temple is named after the clear water in the temple. Down the stone steps of the Okuin is the Otowa Waterfall, which flows all year round. The spring is divided into three parts, representing health, academic success, and marriage. Many people line up here to drink the water and pray for blessings. In addition to the Otowa Waterfall, Kiyomizu Temple also has the Kiyomizu Stage, Main Hall, Jishu Shrine, and Three-storied Pagoda.
