Ninna-ji Temple: The Imperial Residence of Omuro

Ninna-ji Temple, established in 888, is the head temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon sect. After flourishing during the Kamakura period, most of it was destroyed in the Onin War, but it was rebuilt in 1634 with the support of Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu. The temple grounds feature historical buildings from the Edo period, such as the five-story pagoda and the Nio Gate. Since its founding, the temple has housed many treasures, including the principal image of the Amida Triad, Buddhist paintings, and crafts. The entire area is designated as a national historic site known as the 'Former Site of Ninna-ji Imperial Residence,' and the late-blooming Omuro cherry blossoms are designated as a national scenic beauty. Access Kyoto City, Ukyo Ward, Omuro Ouchi (immediately after getting off at 'Omuro Ninna-ji' bus stop or a 5-minute walk from 'Omuro Station' on the Keifuku Kitano Line).
