[Hokkaido] Lake Akan Ainu Kotan Tourism

This time, we will introduce Lake Akan Ainu Kotan in Hokkaido. Ainu Kotan means "Ainu village", and it is here that the production and sale of folk crafts and traditional dances are passed down. There is a memorial hall that recreates an old Ainu house, souvenir shops, restaurants, and more. One of the highlights of sightseeing at Lake Akan Ainu Kotan is the pleasure boat. Lake Akan is home to Churui Island, where the Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center is located. You can get to the island by taking the pleasure boat Mashu-Maru. There are two boarding points for the pleasure boat: Marimo no Sato Pier (starting point) and next to the Ainu Kotan. We boarded the boat near the Ainu Kotan. Both inside and outside the boat are decorated with traditional Ainu patterns and wooden carvings. The pleasure boat takes you on a leisurely tour of the majestic Lake Akan, taking about an hour to an hour and a half. At the Marimo Center, there was an explanation of how marimo become round in Lake Akan, and there were marimo of various sizes on display.
