🍽️ Teochew Tradition at Chao Shan, Kulai – Worth the Drive?

We made the trip from Singapore all the way to Kulai just to finally try 潮汕楼 Restaurant Chao Shan, and while it was a pleasant dinner overall, I’d say it was a one-time journey for us. Located in what felt like an industrial zone, parking was a “free for all” situation—but thankfully, the restaurant itself was clean, spacious, and had a section showcasing live seafood. The service was warm and efficient, with the staff patiently explaining the dishes to us. We went for the classics: a traditional Teochew braised platter, which was really the highlight of the meal. The meats were tender, richly flavoured, and well-balanced. The yam paste dessert (orh nee) was also excellent—smooth, fragrant, and not overly sweet, just the way it should be. The rest of the dishes were decent, but didn’t leave a strong impression. Nothing bad, just not outstanding. Pricing was fair for the quality and portion sizes. In short: a clean, friendly place for authentic Teochew food, especially if you love braised items and yam paste.
