[Moss Village] (Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, former province name: Kaga)

In Kaga Province (present-day southern Ishikawa Prefecture), surrounded by the cool climate and moist soil of the Hokuriku region, abundant forest resources have supported the development of industry and the arts. Coniferous forests line the mountain ranges centered on the sacred mountain Hakusan, and the rapids of the Tedori River, filled with meltwater, have carried nutrients and timber to the plains. Our ancestors who lived in the region have worked to preserve and pass on this blessed natural environment, and even today, facilities that convey the unique climate and history can be found scattered around the foot of Mt. Hakusan. One of these is Hiyomachi, located about 20 minutes by car from the center of Komatsu City, the second largest city in the prefecture. As the gateway from the plains where the city spreads into the mountains, it has played a role as a junction between the mountains and life since ancient times. The industry is forestry, mainly cedar. Wood labeled "Nichiyo cedar" is highly regarded for its toughness, and is used as building material for famous temples and shrines in Kyoto, as well as in the works of architect Kengo Kuma (1954-), who is famous as a wood specialist. In fact, when the words "Nichiyocho, Komatsu City" appear in the corner of the car navigation system, the open rural landscape changes completely, and the sunlight flickers and flickers in a mottled pattern in the deep shadows, and you realize that you have finally entered the "mountain area". Then, a little further from the pavement, a space of deeper colors spreads out, and at your feet, you can see moss that seems to be quietly fluorescent. "Moss Village" is located in one of these forests, and it is a space with a secluded presence that you might pass by if you are not careful. It is said that there are as many as 48 types of moss living in "Moss Village", and each one lives in the shade and coexists with the sun. This was born as a result of the activities of "Forest of Wisdom," which preserves and passes on the cedar forest and conveys the charm of the area's rich nature and culture. Hiyo-cho, which once thrived as a forestry center, has been unable to avoid depopulation, with only seven households currently living there. Considering the enormous amount of work required to manage the forest, concerns about the loss of this precious environment and culture have only grown. In response, Forest of Wisdom was established, and in addition to local residents, volunteers from all over Japan and even overseas are being recruited to carry out activities. It has attracted attention as a practical project that continues to explore not only the visible environment but also the ideal form of circulation based on history and philosophy. When you enter the park through the rustic gate, you can feel the humidity and the smell of grass, which is full of the scent of water. The atmosphere is so tranquil that even the surrounding air seems to be dyed a deep green. The silent and unwavering cedar trees and the water flowing gently through the narrow depression create a contrast between stillness and movement, giving the space even more depth. The moss that quietly watches over them is soothing when viewed as a whole, and a lovely and delicate appearance when observed closely. As you continue walking, wooden buildings suddenly appear, with a nostalgic presence that exudes a taste of serenity. The sudden appearance of the building in the middle of a forest covered with moss and cedars is similar to Chinese landscape paintings and ink paintings, and seems to suggest something represented in Eastern thought and philosophy. The best part is the grounds of the "Nichiyo Shrine," the guardian shrine of the village. The moss-covered stones and shrine building bear faint traces of the people who lived here, allowing you to take your thoughts to a far-off place in history. As I stood there, feeling this mysterious emotion, the sad voices of the cicadas surrounding me seemed to invite me into a beautiful yet mysterious world that lies in the "depths" of Japan.
