Koh Tao

Koh Tao, Surat Thani Province 🐢 is an island in the Gulf of Thailand. The island is curved like a bean seed. The island is located northwest of Koh Phangan, approximately 45 kilometers away. During 1943-1944, Koh Tao was used as a prison for political prisoners in the 'Boworadet Rebellion' case, who were transferred from the prison on Koh Tarutao. The prison was located in Ao Mae Hat. According to the stories of prisoners who were once imprisoned, Koh Tao was a hellish island surrounded by sharks. They had to fight for survival. Their lives were full of hunger, poverty, and diseases, especially malaria. 🏝️In 1947, Tao and Ta Eum, the first pioneers, sailed from Koh Samui. The sailboats they used were old-fashioned, with two masts and sails made from coconut leaves and cloth. They brought rice on the boat. When they arrived at Koh Tao, they began clearing the land and finding remnants of the prison to build temporary huts. Later, they brought their families to settle there. At that time, Koh Tao was home to a large number of sea turtles. During the annual egg-laying season, the beach was full of newborn turtles, turning the sand black.
