Wat Pho Temple, Bangkok

Wat Pho Temple is also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. It is located on Rattanakosin Island, directly south of the Grand Palace. It was built in the 16th century by King Rama I. The temple has more than one thousand Buddha images, many different building structures, chedis and pavilions. The image of the reclining Buddha represents the entry of Buddha into Nirvana and the end of all reincarnations. An annual celebration for the reclining Buddha is held around the time of the Siamese Songkran or New Year in April, which also helps raise funds for the upkeep of Wat Pho. The temple is considered the first public university of Thailand, teaching students in the fields of religion, science, and literature through murals and sculptures. It houses a school of Thai medicine and is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage which is still taught and practiced at the temple. Address: 2 Sanam Chai Rd, Bangkok, 10200 Ambiance/Facilities: 9/10 Highlights: Huge reclining Buddha statue Rating: 5/5
