Phra That Kham Kaen, Khon Kaen Province

Phra That Kham Kaen is located at Wat Chetiyaphum, Ban Kham, Village No. 1, Ban Kham Subdistrict, Nam Phong District, Khon Kaen Province. It is an important religious site for Khon Kaen. It is the most important and oldest pagoda in the history of Khon Kaen. It enshrines the relics of the Lord Buddha and is highly revered by the people of Khon Kaen and the northeastern provinces, as well as neighboring countries. It is a 19-meter-high golden umbrella-topped pagoda with a two-tiered lotus base, curved upwards to form a throne, followed by a reliquary chamber and a spire, which are recessed in the shape of starfruit petals. Then there is a garden of the top and umbrella. There is a legend about Phra That Kham Kaen that the group that brought the relics of the Lord Buddha from the city of Morey (present-day Cambodia) led by the King of Morey, along with 9 Arahants, traveled to bring the relics to enshrine in Phra That Phanom, which was not yet completed. Along the way, they stopped to rest at Don Makham, where Phra That Kham Kaen is currently located. There was a large tamarind tree that had died and only the core remained. The relics of the relics were placed on the core. The next morning, they headed to the construction site of Phra That Phanom. When they arrived, it turned out that Phra That Phanom had been completed. They had to take the relics back along the same route, intending to take them back to their hometown of Moree. When they returned to Don Makham where they had stayed overnight, they saw the tamarind tree that had died and only the core remained. It had come back to life and was sprouting green leaves. It was amazing. They all agreed to build a pagoda over the tamarind tree and enshrined the relics and Buddha images inside. They named it “Phra That Kham Kaen”. They also built a temple as a place for the nine Arahants to stay alongside the relics and built houses and settle down in the vicinity.
