Gathering of Crafts: Revitalized Ancient Residential Community

The Gaotai Residential Area is also broadly considered part of the ancient city of Kashgar, but it is now operated separately from the Old City Scenic Area. The two are very close, separated only by Tuman Road. Both are free to enter. The Gaotai Residential Area is much smaller than the Old City, but their architectural styles are consistent. There are fewer tourists here, allowing for more free exploration. The residential area is distinctly divided into two parts upon entering through the main gate. The front half has been fully renovated and features various specialty shops, including homestays, restaurants, cafes, as well as pottery, brick carvings, Atlas silk, carpets, leather boots, jams, honey, and even blacksmith and tobacco shops. Many of the shop owners are original residents (though some are outsiders doing business). The other half of the area retains the original state of the old houses, with crumbling walls and ruins, and it is unclear if further restoration will take place.
