The ancient city of Kandy, a millennium-old capital

Kandy is the old capital of Sri Lanka from the 16th century, located a hundred kilometers from the current capital, Colombo. It is the Buddhist center of Sri Lanka🇱🇰. An annual festival, the Esala Perahera, features a procession of 100 ornately dressed elephants🐘 on the streets, but only the one selected as the elephant king is privileged to carry the tooth relic tower. Thousands of people take to the streets to celebrate, dancing the Kandy dance. The Temple of the Tooth was also the palace during the Kandy dynasty, and now it is mainly for visitors. You need to remove your shoes at the ticket office before entering, and every day there are tourists from all over the world and devout followers. They come with floral offerings, and the stupa housing the relic has fixed opening hours. We were there around 7 p.m., and there were so many people that we had to queue to get a close look.
