Kenroku-en Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
The amazing Kenroku-en Garden
Having visited many gardens across Japan, Kenrokuen Garden is definitely my personal favourite! Located in Kanazawa, the garden is a strolling type landscape garden of the Edo period and is a true masterpiece of Japanese landscape design. It has rightfully earned its status as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, having been designated as a national site of scenic beauty in 1922 and as a national site of special scenic beauty in 1985. Its name is derived from combining the six attributes of a perfect landscape garden: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, watercourses and panoramas.
The garden appears totally natural but it's in fact man-made. It has many unique features, including the oldest Japanese fountain, raised root pine trees, a plum grove, winding streams with cherry trees on both sides. Now in early April, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the sight of the pink flowers reflected in the still water is truly spectacular.
Here you can also participate in a tea ceremony, a wonderful way to experience the elegance of Japanese culture. A visit I most definitely recommend!
#Kenrokuen
Kenrokuen is a gorgeous and expansive park-like garden in the center of Kanazawa and it is the city’s major attraction. This beautiful park contains one of the top three celebrated gardens in Japan.
The garden was created over the span of several hundred years by the Maeda family, and today is one of the best examples of a strolling-style Japanese landscape garden. The garden offers something to enjoy whatever the season.
Kenrokuen is located in the center of Kanazawa City close to Kanazawa Castle Park. To get to Kenrokuen Garden from Kanazawa Station’s East Exit Bus Terminal you can take the Kanazawa Right Loop Bus from bus stop 7 or the Kenrokuen Shuttle Bus from bus stop 6. Both buses take about 16 minutes and the fare is 200 yen.

Kanazawa Kenrokuen|Linger in the ancient garden to enjoy the refreshing and delightful scenery
|Linger in the ancient garden to enjoy the refreshing and delightful scenery.
❤ The weather is cool in the afternoon, with intermittent light rain. I made an appointment with a friend to stroll through Kenrokuen with an umbrella, enjoying the romantic scenery of nature~
【Garden Introduction】👇
👉 Kenrokuen is the foremost of Japan's three most famous gardens, a circuit-style garden, a typical Japanese traditional garden that recreates natural scenery, and a treasure of Kanazawa City~
👉 Named after Li Gefei's 'Record of Famous Gardens in Luoyang,' Kenrokuen features six sublime views: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water courses, and panoramas~
👉 The garden has Japan's oldest fountain ⛲, and is planted with pine, maple, plum, cherry trees, and flowers such as orchids, chrysanthemums, clematis, and lawns, along with pavilions, terraces, towers, and attics~
👉 The long-established Kenrokuen is an ancient garden with exquisite and stunning scenery, reflecting the garden design style of the Edo period and the delicacy of the Japanese, and it is also the most tranquil place in Kanazawa City~
【Garden Scenery】👇
✨ The 【Kotoji Lantern】 made of granite, with two legs spread apart like the strings of an ancient zither~
✨ The 【Neagari Pine】🌲 is also a spectacle in the garden, with the tree's gnarled roots arching up 2 meters and a huge canopy~
✨ 【Kasumiga-ike Pond】 is located at the prime spot in the courtyard, the largest lake in the garden, surrounded by Kotoji lanterns and Tangzaki pines, with Penglai Island built in the lake~
✨ 【Shigure-tei】 is now a teahouse where people discuss the Japanese tea ceremony 🍵, especially on rainy days, drinking tea is even more atmospheric~
【Garden Impressions】👇
💕 Natural scenery is a balm for the soul. Walking with friends in the garden, admiring the ancient architecture and trees and flowers, the scenery is elegant and beautiful. Influenced by the natural scenery, we forget the hustle and bustle of the city, let our minds fly, and feel joyful and relaxed~
💕 I saw many families bringing their children to visit the garden, and couples meeting secretly in the woods. Here, everything is uncontrolled, here, time seems to stand still, and all things become beautiful~
💕 Missed the cherry blossoms 🌸, missed the best season to visit the garden, admiring the last few red leaves 🍁 moistened by the rain at the turn of autumn and winter, the ancient garden with the sound of wind, rain, and leaves has a serene, elegant, and poetic atmosphere~
💕 We were tired from walking and came to Shigure-tei to taste tea, experiencing the Japanese tea ceremony, gossiping leisurely, and I haven't felt this relaxed and comfortable for a long time~
❤ Even on a rainy day, such an ancient garden with pine, maple, plum, cherry, pavilions, terraces, towers, and attics, and its exquisite and elegant scenery, is simply too pleasant, suitable for leisurely walks, romantic dates, and casual tourism~

Cherry Blossom at Kanazawa Castle Park
#cherryblossom2024
Cherry Blossom blooms again in all of Japan and we made a trip to Kanazawa. One of the great spot for Cherry Blossom viewing is the Kanazawa Castle Park, where the whole stretch of Cherry Blossom at its full bloom, giving the best scenery and many photos spots around. There is also an annual Cherry Blossom festival where vendors selling traditional snacks and food for visitors. Besides visiting the area during day time, this place is also very good for photos hooting during sunset, whereby the vivid golden yellow background with the Cherry blossom gives an excellent picture. It is one of the best place to visit during Cherry Blossom period.

The view of night cherry blossom was magnificent and nice
The entrance fee is free for night sakura viewing.
We drove there so it was difficult to get a car park since lots of people. But it’s convenient to take public transport to there.
You can enjoy sakura in daytime.

Not as crowded as Osaka, beautiful and easy to access, we were surprised by so many cherry blossoms in Kanazawa, Japan. Next to the castle is a beautiful garden that gets busy over the weekend and is open also in the evening. The castle and garden offers many nice spots for lovely pictures and are both great places for morning jogging when it is still quiet and tranquil.

Higashi Chaya District Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Exploring Kanazawa’s Geisha District
My first visit to Kanazawa was a delightful adventure, especially when I decided to explore the Geisha District on foot. It was like stepping into a different era, with traditional wooden houses and cobblestone streets.
One of the highlights was visiting a former Geisha house, which has been transformed into a museum. As I wandered through its halls, I couldn't help but imagine the elegant dances and enchanting conversations that took place within those walls. The museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Geisha, their elaborate costumes, and their commitment to mastering various arts.
After immersing myself in the world of Geisha, I strolled through the district, passing by charming shops showcasing Kanazawa's famous gold leaf craftsmanship. Everywhere I looked, there were dazzling souvenirs and crafts coated in shimmering gold leaf, capturing the essence of this unique city.
Exploring the Geisha District on foot was a truly memorable experience. It allowed me to soak in the history, beauty, and craftsmanship of Kanazawa while feeling a sense of connection to its vibrant past.

Higashi Chaya District
#thingstodo A beautiful late evening, pre or post dinner walk is an ideal time. It's quiet not crowded at all. There are many restaurants decked everywhere and there is even a store that carries some very nice ceramic art work from this area. An enchanting place with lots of historical sights. The views are stunning, and it'll take you back in time of the samurai and shogunate era. Lots of traditional goodies to buy and excite your taste buds.
chaya District
#thingstodo Wonderful area to stroll around and get a glimpse of what life was like before modern buildings and construction. Lovely small alleys to walk down close to the river. Very picturesque and lots if photo opportunities. We we were there mid-morning on a weekday and there were not many tourists about.Comfy street to walk down with lots of small tea shops scattered around. Just a few streets away from the most touristy part it's quite calm and relaxing .
The food and tea can be quite expensive but it is what to be expected from a tourist attraction such as this one.
A rainy day at Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya-Gai☔️
The Hokuriku region of Japan gets the most amount of rain in the entire country. But they shouldn’t discourage you from visiting this beautiful area. One of the many beautiful places that you can visit in Hokuriku is the historic city of Kanazawa. It is the home of the great Maeda clan which was one of the most powerful in all of the country drunk the Edo period. The Higashi Chaya District in Kanazawa magnificently showcases well preserved buildings that are over hundreds of years old. I think the rain adds a rich brown color to the beautiful architecture of the buildings in this district.

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
#artshunting
this time at 1-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa, Japan 920-8509!
beautiful place with full glass museum that can be seen from the outside. it is free for most exhibition except for those that are created by Leandro Erlich.
The famous swimming pool is one of them( which is not free) it’s an optic illusion of someone standing on top and another group of ppl across the glass below (the pool). quite artsy if you like such modern art exhibits.
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
Address: 1 Chome-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa, Ishikawa 920-8509, Japan
Getting there: Take a bus to Hirosaka bus stop, from there it is just a few steps to the museum.
Highlights: The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art exhibits works of acclaimed contemporary artists from Japan and all over the world, and is among Japan's most popular art museums.
What I like the most of this museum is its unique architecture. The museum is comprised of a circular building, with no facade or main entrance. It was designed without a front or back to discourage its patrons from approaching the museum, and consequently its art, from only one direction. 😆
Opening hours: 9am to 10pm daily, closed on Monday.
Admission fee: 1200yen

【Japan Shoryudo】Fourth stop: Kanazawa
🏞️Kanazawa is famous for its production of gold leaf, with 99% of Japan's gold leaf being produced in Kanazawa City. The traditional technique that allows gold leaf to be thinly extended to one ten-thousandth of a millimeter has become a representative craft of Kanazawa, renowned both near and far.
🇯🇵🚇Transportation in Kanazawa
Our previous stop was Takayama, from where you can take a 🚌bus or a train🚊 to Kanazawa. If you buy bus tickets🎫 too late and they are sold out, you have to choose the train, which is not direct and requires a transfer in Toyama. Actually, it's more convenient to travel from Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa. Therefore, when you arrive at a place, make sure to buy your tickets🎫 in advance.
🏠Accommodation
In Kanazawa, we stayed for three days and two nights, choosing to stay at a chain hotel, Mitsui Garden Hotel, which has a large public bath♨️ and a laundry room🧺. The hotel is over 1 kilometer from the JR station, and a taxi costs 1800 yen. Although it's a bit far from the station, it's very close to all the major attractions, all within walking distance🥾, which is very convenient. However, I do not recommend the hotel's 🍽️restaurant, as it's more expensive than outside and not very cost-effective.
☝️Kanazawa's 🍽️Cuisine and 🛝Touring Route
🈯️Day One
Arrive in Kanazawa at noon, get the room, and immediately head to the Omi-cho Market to solve the food issue🍽️, about 200 meters from the hotel. The seafood at Omi-cho Market is plentiful and not expensive, with a rhythm that allows you to eat as you walk. 🦀Matsuba crab is a specialty, and you can buy live ones to be processed, which are fresh and sweet. 🍣🐟Fatty tuna, 🍥scallops, oysters🦪, 🦀crab, 🍤🦐shrimp, and various other seafood products are dazzling. The first day is spent indulging in great food and drink.
🈯️Day Two
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art ⏭️Kanazawa Castle Park⏭️Kenrokuen Garden⏭️Myoryuji Temple⏭️Oyama Shrine⛩️
🌃The swimming pool at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a popular spot for photos, but other artworks are incomprehensible.
🏞️Kanazawa Castle Park and Kenrokuen Garden are together; you can reach Kenrokuen Garden by walking through the park. Kenrokuen Garden is one of the three great gardens of Japan, but it's quite crowded. You can try gold leaf ice cream🍦🍧🍨.
🛕Myoryuji Temple, built in 1643, is also known as the 🥷Ninja Temple due to its many traps and mechanisms. Photography🎦 is forbidden, and the interior is complex, appearing to have four stories from the outside but actually has seven. It's said that a well inside serves as a secret passage to Kanazawa Castle. You must call in advance to make a reservation, and they can speak English or Japanese. The cost is 1200 yen per person. Preschool children👧🧒👦👶 are not admitted. There is a Japanese guide, but you will be given a Chinese guidebook, which is recommended. If you don't know how to make a reservation, you can ask the hotel front desk staff for help.
⛩️Oyama Shrine has a bit of a mixed Eastern and Western feel.
🈯️Day Three
🚦Higashi Chaya District
There are three Chaya districts: Higashi Chaya District, Nishi Chaya District, and Kazuemachi Chaya District. Inside, there are many places to enjoy tea, shops, and you can buy local specialty souvenirs, many of which are regionally limited.
Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, is a museum with a circular building design, featuring walls entirely made of glass. Inside, there are contemporary art exhibitions by various artists, including experimental contemporary art, available for viewing both permanently and on a rotating basis. Some parts of the exhibitions can be accessed for free.
Artworks such as Wrapping (LAR Fernando ROMERO), The Man Who Measures the Clouds (Jan FABRE), Colour activity house (Olafur ELIASSON) are on display, and there are also cool design shops and souvenir stores where you can buy gifts.
