Wat Xieng Thong (Xishuangbanna General Buddhist Temple)

Wat Xieng Thong, known as "Wa Ba Jie" in the Dai language, was first built in 615 AD. With a history of over 1,400 years, it is the first temple built after the introduction of Theravada Buddhism to Xishuangbanna and the first Theravada Buddhist temple in China, boasting a long history and esteemed status. Wat Xieng Thong was the sacred place where the highest ruler of Xishuangbanna before liberation, the Zhao Pian Ling (Dai King), and his chieftains worshipped Buddha. It was also the highest-ranking Buddhist temple in Xishuangbanna. Today, Wat Xieng Thong still governs more than 590 temples of all sizes throughout Xishuangbanna Prefecture. It is the center of worship for Theravada Buddhist followers in Xishuangbanna. Adhering to the architectural style of Theravada Buddhism, Wat Xieng Thong features a grand and steep, multi-eaved hip-and-gable roof, resplendent in gold and jade, with intricate and ornate carvings.
