Inuyama – Where Castles Touch the Clouds and Culture Runs Deep

#cityplaybook #localguides #postandearn #cityplaybook Inuyama may not be the first name that comes to mind when planning a trip to Japan, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Tucked away in Aichi Prefecture, just under an hour from Nagoya, this castle town offered me a slice of traditional Japan without the crowds—and with an atmosphere that lingers long after you leave. The crown jewel of my visit was undoubtedly Inuyama Castle—one of Japan’s oldest surviving original castles, dating back to 1537. Perched on a hill overlooking the Kiso River, the castle may seem modest compared to others, but once I climbed to the top floor and stepped out onto the wooden balcony, the panoramic views took my breath away. The feeling of standing inside a real feudal relic, with creaking floors and ancient timber, made the experience incredibly raw and immersive. I wandered through Inuyama Castle Town, a delightful stretch of Edo-period architecture now filled with artisan shops, street snacks, and cafes. I tried Gohei-mochi (grilled rice cake with a sweet soy sauce glaze)—simple, but addictive. Every storefront had its own story, from handmade ceramics to vintage toys. Another surprising highlight was Meiji Mura, an open-air museum showcasing over 60 preserved buildings from Japan’s Meiji Era, including a piece of the old Tokyo Imperial Hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Walking through this village felt like time travel—blending East and West in a way I hadn’t expected. Best Time to Visit: Spring (late March to April) for cherry blossoms framing the castle and riverside walks. Autumn (late October to November) for crisp air and vibrant fall foliage. Travel Tips: Wear shoes easy to slip off—many historical buildings require it. Don’t miss the river cruise (especially in summer for the Ukai cormorant fishing demonstration). Combine your trip with nearby Gifu or Nagoya for a perfect weekend escape. Location: Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, Japan #inuyamacastle #hiddenjapan #inuyamaoldtown #meijimura #kisoriverviews #historicjapan #undiscoveredjapan #aichiadventures #japancastletowns #inuyamamagic Inuyama is like stepping into the pages of a living history book—charming, unhurried, and quietly unforgettable. It's a place where every path leads to a story worth hearing.
