It is famous as the town where the Oshu Fujiwara clan's headquarters were located at the end of the Heian period. At the time, it flourished as a major city second only to Heian-kyo. Even today, you can recall the prosperity of those days from the ruins of Chusonji Temple and Motsuji Temple.
