Wan Chai's Fortress Hill adds waterfront venue to extend Hong Kong Island's North Waterfront Promenade

With the official opening of the "Water Sports and Recreation Theme Area (Phase 3)" on Wan Chai Waterfront and the "East Coast Park Theme Area (Phase 1A)" on Fortress Hill on December 30, the North Seaside Promenade of Hong Kong Island has been extended to 8.7 kilometers. In addition, the beautification work on the footpath of Shing Sai Road in Kennedy Town was completed last month. The "Water Sports and Recreation Theme Area (Phase III)" is located on Hung Hing Road, overlooking Victoria Harbour to the north, adjacent to the Hong Kong Yacht Club and water bike rental area. Together with the Phases I and II that were opened earlier, the entire theme area covers an area of ​​approximately 1.3 hectares. The newly opened venue provides facilities such as outdoor tables and chairs, shade shelters, dining, toilets, baby rooms and showers. It also has a multi-functional activity space for public use and will facilitate the holding of more water and land activities in the future. A spokesman for the Development Bureau said: "In terms of dining facilities, we have introduced a floating restaurant in the waterfront shared space for the first time to provide different choices for the public. The restaurant is anchored on the water body of the theme area and is mainly used for hosting banquets and events. The newly opened theme area also has a land restaurant covering an area of ​​about 300 square meters. The public can dine indoors or go to the rooftop and open-air dining area to enjoy the view of Victoria Harbour while dining." The spokesman continued, "In recent years, the introduction of waterfront facilities and activities, such as water bikes, children's self-driving tours of Victoria Harbour and various water and land activities, have attracted many citizens to the waterfront. With the opening of the MTR Convention and Exhibition Station, it is more convenient to go to the Wan Chai waterfront. We hope that the new facilities will attract more people to visit and bring a better waterfront experience." Citizens can walk from Wan Chai Ferry Pier along Hung Hing Road to the "Water Sports and Recreation Theme Area (Phase 3)", or from MTR Convention and Exhibition Station Exit A2, both are about five minutes' walk; and from MTR Causeway Bay Station Exit C, via Canal Road West Flyover, it is about nine minutes' walk. The "East Coast Park Theme Area (Phase 1A)" is located west of Hing Fat Street, at the southern end of the already open Theme Area (Phase 1), covering an area of ​​approximately 1,300 square metres and adding a 65-metre-long seaside promenade and recreational facilities. After the opening of Phase 1A, citizens can go from the East Coast Park Theme Area along Whitfield Road Rest Garden and Causeway Bay Fire Station to the Causeway Bay "Vibrant Typhoon Shelter Theme Area", strengthening the connection between Fortress Hill and the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter waterfront. Citizens can walk from Tin Hau MTR Station along Electric Road to Wing Hing Street, then turn into Hing Fat Street to the "East Coast Park Theme Area (Phase 1A)", which takes about eight minutes on foot; while from Fortress Hill MTR Station, turn into Electric Road via Oil Street, get to Watson Road and enter through Phase 1 of the theme area, which takes about nine minutes on foot. Both of the above-mentioned theme areas are pet-friendly venues, and citizens are welcome to visit with their pets on leashes. The beautification project of the pedestrian path along Shing Sai Road in Kennedy Town was completed last month. The approximately one-kilometre-long pedestrian path was decorated with paintings and installations designed for the seaside by local artist Messy Desk.
