Half-day tour of Tai Po Market, a journey to find affordable food

Address-8 Tai Po Rural Committee Street Environment/Facilities - Tai Po Market and Cooked Food Centre, Tai Po Market Sports Centre, Public Library Features - Neighborhood Common People Market Average spending per person - $50-$100 Rating – 4.2/5 The ground floor and first floor of Tai Po Market and Cooked Food Centre are street markets with 260 stalls, making it the street market with the most stalls in Hong Kong. The second floor is a cooked food center with about 40 stalls. There is an outdoor terrace for residents to relax. Since the opening of the East Rail to the Convention and Exhibition Centre and Admiralty stations, the distance between Hong Kong Island residents and the New Territories has been greatly shortened. In the past, it took at least 1.5-2 hours to drive from Hong Kong Island East to Tai Po Market, but now it can basically be reached within 1 hour! There are often blogs and videos recommending Tai Po Market and Cooked Food Centre! From Tai Po Market Railway Station, take Exit A2 along Tat Wan Road to Wan Tau Street and walk for about 5-10 minutes. The modern building opposite that is out of place in the old Tai Po district is your destination. As we visited during afternoon tea time on a weekday, more than half of the stalls in the food centre were closed for business. Unfortunately, I was unable to try the extra thick French toast (Lee Kee) and Hakka glutinous rice cakes (Hua Du Du) that I had prepared for, as they were not open. I turned to Tung Kee, which is famous for its fried pork chops. Tung Kee does not offer a menu or meals. Apart from its most famous fried pork chops/chicken wings, it only provides some basic noodle shop ingredients (such as beef brisket, beef balls, black bean balls, etc.). It charges a flat rate for the whole day and does not offer afternoon tea discounts. I ordered a bowl of signature fried pork chop with rice noodle soup for $42. The size of the pork chop was about the size of two pork chops in an ordinary tea restaurant. The meat was chewy and the fat was fragrant. The taste was a bit like the fried pork chop in Macau. The rice noodles were cooked to the right degree, not too mushy or undercooked, and the soup was light. It is recommended to pair it with vinegar and chili oil to enhance the flavor. The overall price-performance ratio is better than that of the tea restaurant! After enjoying the food, you can go to the wet market downstairs to stroll around. The most unique feature here is that there are many shops on the first floor selling packaged spices, seasoning powders and soup ingredients. They are all available and reasonably priced. If you are a nearby resident, the quality and price of frozen meat underground are far better than Link Market and Jiabao Market. It is definitely a blessing for those who love cooking ❤️ #LocalTourism #SummerFoodRecommendations
