Hong Kong's Sunset Peak: Encounter Stunning Scenery

Sunset Peak, located in the eastern part of Lantau Island in Hong Kong, is the third-highest peak in the city with an elevation of 869 meters. Also known as "Eason Chan Mountain," it is a paradise for hiking and photography enthusiasts. Best Time to Visit Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer stable weather, comfortable temperatures, and clear views, making them the best seasons for hiking. From mid to late November, the summit is adorned with beautiful silvergrass, creating a picturesque sea of grass perfect for photography. Transportation Start from MTR Tung Chung Station and take bus routes 3M, 11, or 23 to Pak Kung Au Station. Follow the signs to the hiking trailhead. The bus ride takes approximately 30 minutes. Hiking Routes • Classic Route: Begin at Pak Kung Au and follow Section 2 of the Lantau Trail to ascend the mountain, then continue towards Sunset Peak. The entire route is about 6 kilometers and takes 3 to 4 hours. This route has less elevation gain, but the initial section is steep, while the latter part becomes gentler with increasingly spectacular views. • Silvergrass Route: Start at Pak Kung Au and follow the silvergrass trail to the summit. The journey is approximately 6 kilometers, moderately challenging, and takes 3 to 5 hours. Along the way, you can enjoy the stunning silvergrass scenery. Tips • Bring enough water and some light snacks. There are no trash bins on the mountain, so carry your trash back with you. • Wear hiking shoes and quick-dry breathable clothing, and bring trekking poles. • The summit can be windy, so it's advisable to carry warm clothing. • Prioritize safety during the hike and proceed according to your physical ability.
